JR Kyushu, name with Kyushu Railway Company are known, is the most important railway operator in Kyushu island. Has the most part of the lines and was created in 1987 as one of Japan Railway Group divisions. Its headquarters are located in Hakata ward, Fukuoka city, Fukuoka prefecture.

Hisatsu Orange Railway Company Limited operates the Hisatsu Orange Railway, a line which was part of JR Kyushu until year 2004. In that year this new company started to operate the line. Headquarters at Yatsushiro city, Kumamoto prefecture.

Kumagawa Railroad operates the little Yunomae Line, a 25 km branch which was operated by JR Kyushu until 1989. The company has its headquarters in Hitoyoshi city, Kumamoto prefecture.

Matsuura Railway operates on north-west zone of Kyushu (Saga and Nagasaki prefectures), working on a 94 km branch which was belonged to extinct Japanese National Railwas until 1987. Headquarters are in Sasebo city, Nagasaki prefecture.

Shimabara Railway is an old company estalished in 1908 which started to operate its own train line since 1911. Headquarters at Shimabara city, Nagasaki prefecture.

The Minamiaso Railway operates a short line since 1986 at south of Mount Aso, in Kumamoto prefecture. Headquarters in Takamori city, Kumamoto prefecture.

Nishi Nippon Railway Company Limited, shortly known as Nishitetsu, is a railroad company that operates various train lines in north of Kyushu island, mostly of these in UIC gauge. Headquarters in Fukuoka city, Fukuoka prefecture.

JR West operates some of Shinkansen trains of Kyushu island, and the Hakata Minami line, a short branch operated by Shinkansen trains to the south of Hakata ward, Fukuoka city, Fukuoka prefecture.
